In the field of social engagement,
there are two groups of students, the active the passive ones. Passive are just
studying (allegedly). What does it mean? Reading clever books, doing research,
attending classes (or parties, parties, parties). Anyway they are simply
busy... I believe they may start a career in some academic fields (or maybe
not…).
On the other hand, there are
students who are busy in a different way – the active people. Let’s divide them
into two groups. The first one, attends already organized events (so called
participants), whereas the second one organizes events itself (they are active
genuinely). Participants constantly search the Internet for free tickets, free
food, free samples, conferences, trainings, meetings with famous people, ect. I
think it's good for them to enjoy students’ life. At any moment they can find a
dream employer, or at least drink a free coke.
However, there are students who are
responsible for those social events. They do their best to satisfy and
entertain the rest. Example? Marcin Meller at the Faculty of Philology. Someone
had to get the idea that it would be cool (because it was, right?) to have him
in our department, and someone had to pay for it (we love the Institute of
Polish). Fortunately, there is an extraordinary project which can satisfy both
active two subgroups and the passive group. Two words: English Cafe. People who
are responsible for the concept (Instytut Regionalny in Katowice) have realized
that more and more people use English to communicate with each other (as I’m
doing now for instance). To meet the expectations of young people, organizers
desperately started looking for an appropriate place for their cafes. Luckily,
they found us – Komunikator Circle. We decided to kill two birds with one stone
- learn how to organize various events and to benefit from it.
Before my first English Cafe I was
afraid of speaking English, but I overcame it and just started talking. It
wasn't so bad, and believe me, I’m not a native-speaker-like user of English . Come on! You don't have to pay thousands zlotys for English lessons, just join us on March 21st in room 107.
Anyway, either you are passive or
active, English Cafe is a great opportunity to hang out. You can meet new
people, learn how to communicate in another language fluently, have a nice
Friday evening (have I already mentioned about the after party?). Be active and
join us next Friday in Sejm Śląski Square (18:30).
